Luwak beans come from one of the most unique and luxurious coffee processes in the world, famously known as Kopi Luwak or Civet Coffee. These coffee beans are harvested after being eaten and partially digested by the Asian palm civet, a small animal native to Southeast Asia. The civet consumes ripe coffee cherries, and during digestion, the cherries' pulp is broken down while the beans remain intact. Once the beans are excreted, they are collected, cleaned, and processed to create Kopi Luwak.
This process is believed to alter the beans’ chemical composition, reducing acidity and creating a smooth, rich flavor with a slightly earthy or chocolaty note. Kopi Luwak is one of the rarest and most expensive coffees globally, often appreciated for its exotic origin and unique taste. However, there is also controversy regarding the ethical treatment of civets in some production methods, which has raised concerns about sustainable and humane sourcing.
